Inilah Historical Figures Who Stabilized Buddhism in China and Japan
Today, I was thinking about Buddhism. I know several famous historical figures. I picked four key people from the history of Buddhism, without paying much attention to which age they lived in, and discovered an interesting fact. Buddhism, an Indian-born religion, propagated to China between the first and the second century. It became popular in China and was introduced to Korea in the fourth century and Japan in the sixth century. The following are the four key features that stabilized Buddhism in China and Japan.
Bodhidharma; He was an Indian monk and the founder of Zen.
He was active in the 5th and 6th centuries in China.
Xuanzang; He was a Chinese Monk. He travelled to India to obtain and deliver original Buddhist documents to China. (602 - 664 AD.)
Prince Shotoku; He was a Japanese imperial crown prince. He was the key person who brought Buddhism to Japan. He built the foundation for the stabilization of Buddhism in Japan. (574 - 622 AD.)
Jian Zhen (Ganjin in Japanese) was a Chinese Monk. He propagated and stabilized Buddhism in Japan. (688 - 763 AD.)
While thinking about early days of Buddhism in China and Japan, I selected these people without knowing their chronology. It is evident from this list that the propagation of Buddhism from India to China and Japan happened in a relatively short period between the sixth and seventh centuries.
Buddhism today would not exist without all the efforts of the foregoing four people, especially Jian Zhen (Ganjin in Japanese), who was invited to teach and guide Japanese Buddhist monks and to stabilize Japanese Buddhism in theearly stages. He tried to travel to Japan six times. However, his first five attempts failed due to political reasons and storms. He lost his eyesight during the storm that occurred on his fifth attempt. At the time of his final attempt to travel to Japan, he was sixty-six years old. He did not give up going to Japan to propagate Buddhism. He finally made it in 753 AD. His contribution to Japanese Buddhism is priceless.

Inilah Historical Bodrum
You'll be in good company if you include Bodrum in the itinerary for your Turkey holidays. The Bodrum of today has risen from the site of the ancient city of Halicarnassus, which was the capital of the kingdom of Caria. Many familiar historical figures from classic Greek mythology hailed from Halicarnassus. Among others, Herodotus the 'father of history' was born in Halicarnassus, and Artemisia the warrior woman led the Carian fleet to war.
The Mausoleum
The Mausoleum is Bodrum's oldest significant historical site, and is a must see destination on your Turkey holidays. It was built by Artemisia II in honour of her husband Mausollos, and overlooked the city for nearly 16 centuries before being destroyed in an earthquake. Its ruins were then further broken up to use in the construction of the nearby castle. A masterpiece of architecture, it was hailed as one of the wonders of the ancient world.
Although little remains of the mausoleum today, the site pays homage to this monumental structure which in its prime stood over 50 metres high.
The Amphitheatre
Located on the Bodrum to Gumbet road, the Ancient Amphitheatre of Bodrum dates back to the time of Mausoluss in the Hellenistic age (300-30BC). It is carved out of the hillside surrounding Bodrum, providing a panoramic view of the city and beyond. With an original seating capacity of around 13000, the theatre consists of three distinct sections; the stage, the orchestra seating (in a half oval) and the audience seating. It is still possible to see inscriptions of names on some of the seating acknowledging the original patrons of the theatre. Today this remarkably well preserved site is still in use during the high season of holidays in Turkey for outdoor concerts and shows.
St Peter's Castle
The city's most visible monument is built over 30,000 square ft on a promontory in the Bodrum harbour.
Highly visible from both land and sea, St Peter's Castle isone of the world's best preserved medieval monuments. Its origins go back to the Knights of St. John, who constructed the castle in the early part of the 15th century using parts of the ruined Mausoleum. It originally served as a military stronghold, and in later years saw life as a prison, but today the castle houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This fascinating museum takes you on a journey through the rise and demise of the ancient mariners who met their fate on the Anatolian shores. You can see the famed 'Glass Wreck', as well as one of the oldest shipwrecks of the world (14th century BC) and finds from several Bronze Age Ships. The museum world renowned and serves as a major tourism draw card on a holiday to Turkey.
Inilah Historical Attractions in Edinburgh
Edinburgh is known as a city with a vibrant, violent history and serenity. You can feel and read about on almost every street corner with historical attractions in Edinburgh. Its history will make your blood run cold because it was once home to brutal murderers, grave robbers and cannibals who have left the locals with more than a handful of tales. Here is lots of information about it at the Edinburgh Dungeon!
'Auld Reekie' (or 'Old Smoky', Edinburgh's nickname as a result of the notoriously poor air quality in the past) is also a city of writers, inventors and royalty.
World-renowned authors Sir Walter Scott and Sir Arthur Conan Dolye were both born in Edinburgh as was Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone.
For history buffs, the first stop in Edinburgh should always be Edinburgh Castle.
The crown jewel of our town has always been and always will be the most important of all the historical attractions in Edinburgh.
Having played a role in the key passages of Scottish history, such as the Wars of Independence and the Jacobite uprising, a visit to Edinburgh Castle is essentially a tour through Scottish history itself.
Sloping downhill from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace, the Royal Mile or High Street is the backbone of Edinburgh's Old Town and the most famous street in Scotland. It is also your point of descent into Edinburgh's dark past on one of our famous ghost tours.
At the bottom of the Royal Mile you will find the futuristic tent-like structure which houses Our Dynamic Earth, an amazing interactive museum which will fill your boots with the history of our planet if Edinburgh's colourful history isn't enough for you!
A short walk from the Royal Mile down George IV Bridge will take you to the National Museum of Scotland where you can learn all about the history of Scotland and its people. Historical attractions in Edinburghappear around every corner.
The mile-long High Street has played a central role in the history of Edinburgh since the 12th century. Once the scene of an open-air trading market, the Royal Mile became home to thousands of people when timber buildings were put up. The gaps between these buildings were and still are referred to as 'closes'. On your visit to the Royal Mile, be sure to explore the dozens of alleyways which branch off the main street.
After the destruction of the medieval township in 1544 by the English, stone housing was erected and the Royal Mile gradually became more and more overcrowded. By the mid 17th century, around 70,000 people called the Royal Mile their home.
Modernisation of the street took place in the mid-19th century and began to take on the appearance of the Royal Mile we see today. As you walk down this street, try to imagine what life was like back then, the squalor, the dirt and disease. It would be difficult to find a more distinctive street anywhere in the world. Of all the historical attractions in Edinburgh, it is certainly the most atmospheric.
The Old Town of Edinburgh
Effectively, the section of the city centre to the south of Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh Castle is the Old Town. This part of Edinburgh along with the New Town is a UNESCO world heritage site.
Being situated on the slopes of the volcanic Castle Rock, the Old Town is laid out on different levels meaning steep streets, tight alleyways and small bridges are the norm. In my opinion, this makes the Old Town an excellent location to explore and get lost!
In the past thirty years, underground vaults have been discovered which at one time were used for storage and as living quarters for relatively poor tradesmen. It is also rumoured that serial killers Burke and Hare scoured the vaults for potential victims and also stored corpsesthere!
Edinburgh's famous ghost tours will give you access to some sections of the vaults and also to underground streets like Mary King's Close, which were reportedly closed off during the 17th century to contain the spread of the bubonic plague. Historical attractions in Edinburgh don't come scarier than that!
Nowadays, the Old Town where 80,000 people lived in the 18th century, is extremely popular among locals and tourists looking to learn about 10 centuries of history and spend time in some of the countless pubs, bars and clubs which line almost every street corner.
Areas of the Old Town like the Cowgate and the Grassmarket, which was a place of execution in times gone by, are now partying hotspots. It is a special feeling relaxing with your friends in traditional pubs and modern hangouts surrounded by hundreds of years of history.
Greyfriars Bobby
The story of Greyfriars Bobby is one which has touched the hearts of so many people around the world.
Bobby was a Skye Terrier who belonged to a Mr John Gray, a night watchman for the Edinburgh City Police. After spending two years almost permanently by his owner's side, Bobby was left to fend for himself when Gray sadly died of tubercolosis in the winter of 1858.
The little Terrier spent the last fourteen years of his life guarding John Gray's grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Greyfriars Bobby died in 1872 and was buried near the gate of Greyfriars Kirkyard only a few metres from his owner's grave.
This fourteen year-long display of loyalty and devotion touched the local citizens and Lady Burdett-Coutts had a small statue of Bobby set up on the corner of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row a year after his death. This statue has become one of the most popular and significant historical attractions in Edinburgh.
This story has spawneda number of books and films and Bobby's statue and grave have become popular with tourists and locals wishing to pay their respects to the loyal creature.
Such is the importance of Bobby's heart-rendering story to the people of Edinburgh, it is as much a part of Edinburgh's history as any other key figure or event.
The Edinburgh Dungeon
Well, the Edinburgh Dungeon isn't for the faint-hearted! In fact, it is definitely the creepiest, scariest yet arguably the most-entertaining of all the historical attractions in Edinburgh.
The Dungeon is located in Market Street, next to Waverley Train Station, a stone's-throw from Princes Street and will transport you back into Edinburgh and Scotland's dark and downright dangerous past! Even though most countries have a sinister, suspect history, Scotland really does stand out from the rest when it comes to murder, incest, cannibalism, theft, disease and bloody war....have I put you off yet?!
For some reason, we Scots actually like to talk about our murky past as if it's something to be proud of....as a result, we have the Edinburgh Dungeon...an attraction packed with shows, special effects, hair-raising rides and frights which give you an all-too-real insight into our violent past!
You'll find out about age-old torture methods, callous criminals, the fate of Scottish patriot William Wallace and the brutal crimes of some of Edinburgh's most notorious murderers such as Burke and Hare and Sawney Bean's family...
If you still have your stomach in check after all that, give the infamous Extremis ride a go....I'll let you find out about that one yourself! Opening times vary throughout the year but the opening hours of the Edinburgh Dungeon are generally longer during the summer months and at weekends.
Please be warned however! If I regularly come close to loose-bowel syndrome at the EdinburghDungeon, young children could also find this attraction disturbing. Please use your own discretion...oh, and don't try any of what you see at home!
Our Dynamic Earth
If you've learned all there is to learn about Edinburgh's history, why not get started on the history of planet Earth?! Our Dynamic Earth is an incredibly interesting 'museum' situated next to the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood Palace at the foot of the Royal Mile.
I put museum in quotation marks because Dynamic Earth is in actual fact so advanced in terms of its scope and set-up, it almost goes beyond the definition of museum into an interactive universe of knowledge for the 21st century.
Housed in a white, futuristic, armadillo-shaped tent (a blunt, yet accurate description!) Our Dynamic Earth will take visitors from the dawn of time, presenting the big bang theory, through the creation of Earth, the time of the dinosaurs up to the world we know (or think we know) today.
Expect to experience the numerous climates of our planet through interactive displays and impressive technology. Face up to the possibly drastic changes in our way of life as you learn about population growth and climate change. Our Dynamic Earth is an attraction that will fascinate, excite, shock and inspire both young and older visitors.
The Edinburgh Museum of Childhood
What makes this museum so unique is the fact it was the very first of its kind in the world in 1955. No other museum had specialised in the history of childhood before the Edinburgh Museum of Childhood opened its doors.
The museum not only looks at the way children were brought up and educated in Scotland but also displays toys and games from around the globe to give visitors an international perspective on childhood.
Amongst the museums numerous multimedia exhibits are the 1930s classroom and the1950s street-games exhibit where visitors can observe how children were taught and how they entertained themselves in decades long since passed.
One of the most popular historical attractions in Edinburgh among young children, families and young-at-heart adults, the Museum of Childhood has countless children's toys, games and objects from the past and present on display and many audio recordings of children singing and playing as you walk through the museum.
Admission is free so it's a great way to keep children (and yourself!) entertained without putting your hand in your pocket. The Edinburgh Museum of Childhood is open from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm. During the summer months of July and August, the museum is also open on Sundays from 12 noon till 5pm.

Inilah Satsuma Figures and Statues
Satsuma vases and pottery is famous the world over due to the quality of the product and also the images, designs and production of the items too. Probably the most famous items of Satsuma Pottery are the vases and bowls that are lavishly adorned with colorful images of Japanese life, society, animals, plants and flowers. The enameled images form a glorious snapshot of historic Japan and also ensure that the items are very valuable and highly collectible.
Also made, but not as popular as the aforementioned items are the figurines made by the same factory and makers from the southern island of Japan and the ones that fall under the banner of being a piece of Satsuma earthenware. In fact, many people dispute that the satsuma figures were even made in this area as they are not too common and therefore may not be authentic. After all, the Satsuma name and brand was copied all over the world as it was so popular and always fetched a good price.
The proper pottery from this area is milky white or of a creamy complexion, with a light transparent glaze applied over the top of the figure which then dries with a thin crackled effect which is totally intentional. It is not a sign of age or that the item is an old antique. It is part of the design of the pieces and was one of the things that make Satsuma figures so recognizable.
The figures that were made over 300 years ago feature people from that era; perhaps a local notable person or person of high standing within the community. The clothing that they wear is intricately decorated with the enamel paint and the artists also used a technique that allowed certain parts of the enamel to be raised which gives the artwork on the statue an extra dimension and favorable look. The figures also seem to be slight caricatures of the people they perhaps resemble. Overly large figures and distorted faces and expressions are common. The figures are more often shown standing and holding itemssuch as fans, baskets or plants and flowers.
These figures are highly sought after items due to the fact that they are fairly seldom seen throughout the Japanese antiques market. There are many other Japanese statues and figures on sale all over the world, but only a hand full of them will truly be from the region that made the Satsuma name famous and valuable across the world.

Inilah Historic Opportunities In Real Estate
It's often said, "What's Past is Prologue." In real estate, the past can indeed determine the future, when buyers choose to restore or preserve a historic property. Opportunities abound for those wanting to purchase a historic home, but so do questions about the soundness of the investment.
Before making an investment in history, Alex Pachedzhiev and The Realty USA Team recommend that potential home buyers consider these questions:
What regulations govern local historic buildings and districts?
Does the house need extensive restoration?
Are original or substitute materials available for repairs?
Are craftsmen who are knowledgeable about historical materials and building systems available?
How will the house be appraised?
Knowing what to look for is an important first step. Potential buyers should understand that there are significant differences between a historic house and a new one. Before purchasing a historic home, consumers will want to research just how much restoration is needed and how much the restoration will cost. That includes, of course, uncovering any possible environmental problems not typically found in new construction such as the presence of asbestos or lead paint.
Knowledge of any structural problem and the time and money needed to fix it should not only influence the decision of whether to buy, but also how much to offer. In some cases, the seller may be required to undertake some of the work as part of the purchase agreement.
Yet the advantages of owning a historic house often outweigh the work that goes into finding and securing one. There is a rewarding sense of history in the unique detailing and meticulous craftsmanship found in historic homes as well as the satisfaction of restoration.
There may also be financial benefits for a historic home owner. Those benefits range from reductions in property taxes and adjustments to assessed value, to state income tax credits and property taxfreezes for qualified rehabilitation and restorations.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation reports that 37 states including Alexandria Virginia and the District of Columbia have laws that provide individuals with incentives for owning historic properties.
Not every old home is historic. A historic house is an example of the cultural or physical development of a community, state, or the nation due to its architecture or association with an important historical figure or event.
If a home does qualify as a historic property, then it may be listed individually or as part of a historic district. The listing of a building or district in the National Park Service's "National Register of Historic Places" provides public recognition of its importance, but will not interfere with an owner's right to alter, sell, or determine how an individual property may be used.
A local or state government housing preservation organization usually will assist owners who want to pursue a historic designation. However, even if the historic building meets the designation criteria, it will not be listed if the majority of property owners in a district object for whatever reason. In this case, the building is put on an "eligible" list should the objections be overcome in the future.
For more information on historical properties, contact the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers at 444 North Capitol Street, NW, Suite 342, Washington, DC 20001-1512.

Inilah Mothers Day: A Historical Account
Many of us are not aware of this, but the concept of Mothers Day dates back to centuries. The ancient Greeks celebrated mothers day in honor of Rhea, the mother God. Then this occasion was celebrated by the early Christians in honor of mother Mary. Mothering Sunday became a religious day.
When the British settled in New England, they discontinued celebrating Mothering Sunday. This is because they did not get enough time to dedicate to Mothering Sunday. Much later, in the year 1872, a woman named Julia Ward Howe revived the trend of celebrating a special day for mothers. This is what has come down to us as mothers day.
In the year 1907, Anna M Jarvis, a teacher from Philadelphia stated celebrating mothers day to honor her own mother Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. She convinced several legislators and also several businessmen to dedicate a day exclusively for mothers, a day which will celebrate motherhood. The very first mothers day that she celebrated was done at the church in the form of a church service. She places several white flowers.
The white flowers were symbolic of her mothers virtues. They represented the womans sweetness, purity of her being and the patience of her character. All the hard work that Anna undertook finally bore fruits. In the year 1914, President Woodrow Wilson gave out his proclamation that the second Sunday of May is going to be celebrated as mothers day.
The popularity of mothers day has grown ever since then. Slowly commercial motives were drawn as gift giving became an essential part of mothers day. Anna was displeased at this. This is not how she conceived the idea of mothers day to be like. She felt that the true meaning and the significance of the occasion was getting lost and profit making motives was gaining importance.
Mothers day, as it has turned out to be, is a day of celebration and a day dedicated to mothers. On this day people give several presents to their mothers andalso to the motherly figures in their lives. There are various gifts to choose from.
It can be anything from cards, flowers, chocolates, cookies, clothing, jewelries etc. many people take their mothers out for a treat. Mothers day is an occasion that is celebrated throughout the world. Some of the countries celebrate mothers day on the second Sunday of May.
Countries which celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May are
Denmark,
Finland,
Italy,
Turkey,
Australia,
and Belgium
A little about Mothering Sunday
Christens based in England celebrated mothers day on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This festival was in honor of Mother Mary. Then a religious holiday was declared on Mothering Sunday. Those who worked outside had to return home and pay their reverence at the church in honor of Mother Mary. She was celebrated as a spiritual power which gave life to the people and also safeguarded them from all types of harm.
